Secret of a Healthy Glowing Skin

By

The secret to a healthy glowing skin is all about adopting a healthy life style and making the right choices to keep your skin healthy. What you eat reflects on your skin. Eating healthy food makes your skin healthy. Using the right creams and lotions for your skin keeps your skin hydrated and wrinkle free.

Skin is the largest organ of the body. It protects and acts as a cover for the entire body. Here are some ways by which you can keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Eating the right food

A well balanced diet is the best way to a healthy skin. Include colorful vegetables, fruits, calcium rich low fat milk and dairy products in your daily meals. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole grain bread, cereals, rice grains or pasta every day.

Vitamin A is very important for a healthy skin. Vitamin A is responsible for repairing damaged skin cell and maintaining the skin. Low fat dairy products are rich in Vitamin A.

Antioxidants helps preventing skin cells from being damaged. Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums are rich in antioxidants.

Fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6 are very important for strengthening the skin. The best sources of fatty acids are canola oil, fax seeds, walnuts and fish.

Healthy oils such as extra virgin olive oil are a good source of essential fatty acids. These oils help to keep the skin healthy and moisturized. Any fat even healthy ones are high in calories. Our body requires only two tablespoons of oil every day,

Selenium is a mineral which is important to prevent damage of skin cells. When selenium content is high in skin cells, the damage of the skin due to UV rays of the sun is lessened considerably. Whole wheat bread, muffins, cereals, turkey, tuna and brazil nuts are good sources of selenium.

Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties that are good for skin health. It protects the skin cells from harmful effects of the sun.

Water is very important to keep the skin soft and supple. The body needs eight glasses of water every day. When the skin is properly hydrated sweating increases which removes toxins from our body. This helps to clean and clear skin. Well hydrated skin helps in absorbing nutrients into the skin cells.

Protection from the Sun

When the skin is overexposed to the sun, the skin develop wrinkles, age spots appear and in extreme cases, causes skin cancer.

Choose sunscreen lotions with a broad spectrum of SPF 15. Use sunscreen lotions according to the specified instructions. Apply sunscreen on all parts of your body exposed to the sun. Apply generously, every two hours if you are outside. Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming.

Avoid the sun during 10 am and 4 pm. This is the time when UV radiation from the sun, which causes damage to the skin, is the strongest.

Use sunscreen even when it is cloudy or when you are playing in a room with many windows. This is because UV rays of the sun penetrate clouds and glass windows too.

Wear pants and long sleeved shirts for protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses when going out on a bright sunny day.

If you are walking, running, playing golf or even swimming in the bright sun, then wear sun-protective clothing.

Smoking

Smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layer of the skin. This reduces the oxygen supply to the skin. Smoking damages the collagen and elastin (fibers that are responsible for strength and elasticity of the skin). Smoking causes appearance of wrinkles on your skin. The best way to protect your skin is to stop smoking.

Skin Cleansing

Skin cleansing is important to maintain a healthy skin. Exfoliate to remove dead cells from your skin. There are many types of loofahs that are available to use while bathing. Loofahs help to remove the dead skin cells. After exfoliating moisturizing is the next step. Use a moisturizing lotion after a bath or after washing your face.

Choose a gentle facial scrub for the face. Use skin toners once a week. Apply moisturizing lotion after drying your face. Wear gentle makeup which will not harm your skin.

Exercise

Make exercise a part of your daily routine. Nutrients and oxygen is delivered to the skin through the blood. Exercise improves blood circulation which helps in delivering the vital nutrients and oxygen to the skin.

Sleep

Have a good night’s sleep. Sleep is the time when the body is relaxed. If you do not get a good night’s sleep, then you will look tired, run down and stressed. Stress accelerates the formation of wrinkles on your skin. Dark circles appear under your eyes if you do not get good night’s rest continuously. In addition, sleep relaxes the facial muscles and help to smoothen the lines on your face.

A combination of healthy diet, exercise, skin cleansing and good habits keeps the skin healthy and glowing.

Some very good tips in your hub. I think sun damage is the worst thing for our skin, but if we keep ourselves healthy in general then it does show in our skin, which your hub points out. A useful hub.

Great information---I think we underestimate how much of an impact our diet has on how we look and feel--I know that when I feel dehydrated, I also feel really sluggish--and I have heard that sufficient water is important not only for skin but for general health--I had not considered selenium though--thank you!
